Buchan Caves
Heading inland from Lakes Entrance to Buchan Caves, we passed rolling countryside along the way. Mostly cattle/dairy farming in this area.
We took a guided tour of the Royal & Fairy Caves exploring narrow passages that open up into enormous caverns full of calcite formations. The caves were formed over 400million years ago by ancient rivers flowing & seeping through the limestone rock. The stalactites & stalagmites then form as the water drips down leaving the calcite deposit, each one takes millions of years to form.
There are calcite rimmed pools & curtain formations, variations of colour depending on the mineral deposits.
Late afternoon, back to the beach at Lakes Entrance & then an evening walk along the water's edge at Metung where we'd seen the dolphin yesterday.......tonight a seal was feeding in the same area of Bancroft Bay, coming to the surface with its fish & getting mobbed by seagulls after a free meal. (Another point to Barb on the spotter's stakes!!)
